Meet the Team

Further Considerations & Class Descriptions for Youth Participants

We will be running kids (under 12yo) classes on Tuesday and Thursday from 545 - 640pm:

- Show up at 540, get changed into judogi uniform or show up dressed.

- The class will start at 545, if you show up late just quietly enter and join the class.

- The class will run until 640.

- There is also an optional ‘high performance’ class on saturdays from 1100 to 100 for those that are interested, included as part of monthly fee:

- these kids and teens are in the competitive provincial and interprovincial streams.

- requires greater focus and more concentration and more effort than regular class, however all members are absolutely welcome.

Class composition for kids includes:

- yoga asana for kids to improve overall fitness to adequately prepare your child for judo training.

- learning how to carefully fall to the ground with special techniques (ukemi in Japanese).

- formal judo training, which at a young age is limited to careful throwing techniques (tache-waza in Japanese) and restraint/pins/holddown techniques on the floor (ne-waza in Japanese).

- various fun judo games, british bulldog and the like.

- yoga meditation for kids to improve concentration and focus.

It’s a busy 45mins! John and I have been in judo for decades and teaching and coaching for years, and have all the required certifications from Judo Canada for teaching and coaching your kids. I also have RYT 200/500 certifications for the yoga and meditation piece. We have enjoyed great benefits from formal judo training as kids, teens and continue to as adults. We call it ‘judo life’. Please google Jigoro Kano for more information on the history of judo as a practice and way of life. It is our goal to convey these practices to your kids in a fun, stress free, yet formal environment.

Our class fee schedule has been developed to be competitive with other martial arts offerings in the valley:

registration to JudoBC/year: ~$90

club judo uniform: $100

1 person/month: $140

2 people same family/month: $240

3 people same family/month:$300

4 people same family/month: $320

punch cards: please enquire. for extenuating family circumstances or responsibilities to school or other sports.

we will take payment by email transfer at pacifickodokandojo@gmail.com on the first of every month, or the first class of every month.

Further Considerations & Class Descriptions for Teen/Adult Participants.

We will be running adult class on Tuesday and Thursday from 630 - 830pm. the formal class ends between 830pm, at which point we do whatever we like, extra training, more fighting, more throwing or just hang out. or go home. On saturdays between 11 - 1pm we do a high performance session for the competitive stream fighters. Anyone is welcome to join in, and put in the full effort to keep morale up and work as hard as everyone else.

Class composition is:

- Yoga asana at the beginning to warm up and short yoga meditation at the end to cool down.

- Formal judo training; throws, hold downs, chokes, arm locks.

- We incorporate all kinds of Jiu Jitsu ground work and grappling as it applies to the Judo practice.

- Randori fighting.

Adult class should be fun, invigorating and intense. It can be any one of these things, or all of them, you take your practice to your own level. Adult class should also be considerate of the fact that we are adults and injury can put us out of work, so we take care of each other with good technique, and a solid yoga practice to increase strength, flexibility and agility.

Our class fee schedule has been developed to be competitive with other martial arts offerings in the valley:

registration to JudoBC/year: ~$90

Club judo uniform: $100

1 person/mth: $140

2 people same family/month: $240

Jiu Jitsu Training

  • Jiu Jitsu in Japanese means the ‘the gentle art/technique’.

  • Traditional Jiu Jitsu practice involves demonstrating and executing competitive and self- defence maneuvers against an opponent.  This includes limited throwing of the opponent, disabling and disarming the  adversary, pins, chokes and joint locks.

  • The technical practice of Jiu Jitsu involves repetition of the various maneuvers from a standing position or ground position.

  • Jiu Jitsu training at our dojo will be undertaken primarily as an adjunctive practice that will be complementary to the Judo practice. There will be opportunities for advanced Jiu Jitsu trainings.

  • There are certain Jiu Jitsu techniques that are not taught, as they cannot be used during sanctioned judo tournaments, and can be considered as somewhat risky in a practice setting.

  • Developing core strength is integral to the sport.  This is achieved through physical literacy training.  Physical literacy is the ability to express one’s thoughts and intentions as physical movement of the body in three dimensions, as well as interacting with other actors in three dimensions.  Our goal is safety via physical literacy.  As physical literacy increases, participant safety increases.  Literacy is constantly assessed by instructors, determining competency and informing the participants ability to advance.  There are two modalities that will be used to achieve these goals.  Primarily, yoga asana (postures) will be used to address physical literacy by developing core strength, and at the same time will increase the envelope of function of the body to match the total range of motion of body.  Secondarily, gymnastic tumbling will be used to enhance the coordination required to safely navigate and accommodate various training maneuvers.

  • Teen and adult attendance is encouraged.

  • Technical trainings and skill assessment is done in accord with a syllabus and curriculum published by the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation.

Yoga Sessions

  • Yoga in sanskrit means ‘to yoke/bind’ or ‘to cause union’.  This is a specific reference to binding the mind and body together as one.

  • Yoga, or union, is achieved through yoga asana (postures), ayurveda (study of life processes in the body) and meditation (creating a single point of focus for the mind).

  • Yoga as a concept and as a field of study is wide ranging.  In practice, and as it pertains to our life inside and outside of the Dojo, we will be focusing on kinesiology, basic body functionality as appropriate for the attending audience, and meditation as a form of relaxation.

  • Our Yoga program is also embedded in our martial arts program, so participants will enjoy the benefit of both at the same time.

  • We have morning yoga sessions on Wednesday and Friday from 7 am - 8am.

    • we are focusing on very basic yoga asana for a novice or beginner, or an intermediate practitioner that is returning to practice after some absence.

    • intensity will vary from session to session.

    • our yoga practice is a holistic practice that involves yoga asana, ayurvedic consideration and consultation, meditation/dhyana (mantra and single point focus) and pranayama breath work.

Judo Training

  • Judo in Japanese means ‘the gentle way’.

  • Traditional Judo practice involves demonstrating and executing competitive and self defence maneuvers against an opponent.  This includes throwing opponents from a standing position and pins, chokes and arm locks from an inferior ground position.

  • All of the techniques and a lot of the language that describes the practice is taught in Japanese.

  • The technical practice of Judo involves repetition of the various maneuvers from a standing position or ground position.

  • There is also a practice in Judo of what is called ukemi - waza.  this means ‘to receive’, in this case it means to receive a throw.  This enables tori (the thrower) to reliably and safely throw uki (the receiver), without discomfort or injury.

  • Technical trainings and skill assessment is done in accord with a syllabus and curriculum published by JudoBC and Judo Canada.

Combining Judo, Jiu Jitsu and Yoga

  • This practice was developed by Jigoro Kano, and brought into practice in Japan in 1882.

  • Dojo in Japanese means ‘to pursue, in a place’.

  • Historically, Judo and Jiu Jitsu were considered as the same. Traditionally, the practices together may be considered as Jūjutsu.

  • For certain historical and geographical reasons there were technically divergent schools of thought as to utility and practicality of the Jūjutsu schools of martial arts in the mid 19th century.  For these reasons, evolution occurred, and the result was the practice of Judo and the practice of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

  • Contemporary practice and competition in  both of these martial arts has demonstrated a convergence of these styles of combat training.

  • It is the purpose of our Dojo to begin to bring these practices back together for practical and competitive reasons; our students will be among the first to truly be cross trained in Judo and Jiu Jitsu.

  • There have been some attempts to incorporate Yoga programming into BJJ. There have been no such efforts in the Judo world.  We will attempt to be trendsetting in this effort of integrating yoga into regular Judo training.

Women's Self Defence Course

41npOeK7VdL.jpg

Our instructors have taken a Judo Canada accredited program that has certified them to provide a course specializing in Women's Self Defence.  The material covered in the course is wide ranging. With some commitment and repetition it will provide a solid foundation for protection, self defence and self preservation. It is important to recognize and realize that one does not have to become a competitive, or even a recreational 'martial artist' to benefit from this course and instil the confidence required for mastery of basic and intermediate self defence techniques. Aggressive and combative people are surprised by even marginal self defence skills.

Further to the Judo Canada program, this course follows the evidence based recommendations, precepts and lessons in the adjacent text 'Transforming Trauma with Jiu - Jitsu' that are required to deliver a trauma informed program. Admission for this course will be $10 per person. Please inquire about dates/times.
